What is a decent brand of golf clubs to buy for a first timer (male).?

I'm getting into golf, and I don't want to spend a boat load of money on clubs. After all, I'm just starting out. Also, where can I get a great deal on golf gear?

To start with, get a cheaper set from Walmart, ShopKo, Target, or any other discount retailer. Brand name for a starter set doesn't really matter. Usually around $120-$150. These sets will give you enough to start and will be enough to see if you enjoy the game. I also recommend not going hog-wild on all the accessories that are sold at these places. Get a set of clubs, a couple bags of tees (one bag a short tees, one bag of longer tees for use with the driver), a couple of boxes of balls (or bags of recycled ones),a glove (if you want), and a bag cart or stand bag. After all that....hit the course (not any houses) and have fun.

Check at the thrift stores,I got a set of Wilson for my nephew at one, with shoes, roller cart, vynil bag, wool head covers, was about $50.
pretty much any *.*-mart will have a beginner set which includes everything you'll need in order to get started. they're cheap both financially and production wise but you won't be able to tell the difference anyways. usually no more than $200 max.

golf gear? check golfsmith.com in the closeout section or go to a tj maxx, marshalls or ross and they always have cheap golf shirts and stuff like that. eBay too if you're into that sort of thing
